Glenn E. Zimmerman World War II Collection
Title
Description
The Glenn E. Zimmerman World War II Collection is comprised of material related to Zimmerman's 1942-1946 World War II service.
The collection contains Zimmerman's military identification card with case, which includes a black-and-white portrait of Zimmerman, as well as a leather Honorable Discharge wallet. The wallet housed two (2) documents, including Zimmerman's 1946 Notice of Separation from the United States Navy and a form letter from then-Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal expressing gratitude for Zimmerman's wartime service.
The collection also contains a small amount of ephemera, including two (2) holiday greeting cards with menus for Christmas 1943 and Easter 1944 at Norman (Oklahoma) Naval Air Station and one (1) menu for Thanksgiving 1943 at New Orleans (Louisiana) Naval Air Station.
At the end of the collection are twenty-one (21) black-and-white photographs, circa 1942-1946, of Naval aircraft and a U.S. Navy dirigible, including images of Grumman F4F Wildcats, General Motors (Eastern) FM-2 Wildcats, and Beech GB-1 Travellers. Some of the photographs have numbers printed on the back and two (2) are stamped as "Official Photograph Not to Be Used for Publication by Order of Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics." The aircraft are depicted in flight and on the ground. There is one (1) photograph of what may be a captured Nazi aircraft. Based on the landscape in the background, it is likely that most of these images were taken while Zimmerman was stationed at the Quillayute Naval Auxiliary Air Station in Washington State.
