Vietnam War Collections
The Bruce Mennella Vietnam War Collection relates to the 1968-1972 military service of Mennella, an Air Intelligence Officer in Naval Fighter Squadron 114 (VF-114), nicknamed "Aardvark Squadron." The collection is comprised primarily of photographic materials, including seventy-seven (77) aerial reconnaissance photographs of Vietnam and Laos, circa 1971-1972; one hundred forty-nine (149) photographs taken or collected by Mennella and his squadron mates during their military service, circa 1968-1972; and twenty-six (26) photographs of the Blue Angels performing at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Air Show, circa 1970-1971. The photos depict military life, operations, personnel, and aircraft. Locations include Vietnam, Laos, Japan, and Hong Kong.
The collection also contains a small amount of ephemera, such as a decal for the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School and pages from a Pacific Stars and Stripes newspaper, May 9, 1972. Also included is a 48-page booklet titled “Summer of ‘71” that contains inside jokes and comics related to a Vietnam-era combat tour.
The Calvin H. and Yun Yau Kam Collection primarily relates to the 1969-1971 military service of Calvin H. Kam during the Vietnam War. The collection contains military orders, records, and images that document his activities with the United States Army, in particular his time stationed in Southeast Asia. The sixty-eight (68) slides depict military life, personnel, operations, and aircraft. Identified locations include Cambodia and Vietnam.
In addition to the materials on Calvin, five (5) black-and-white photographs and two (2) clippings relate to Yun Yau Kam, Calvin's father, who served during World War II and the Korean War.
The James H. Platt Vietnam War Collection relates to the 1967-1968 military service of Platt, a U.S. Air Force First Lieutenant and Rescue Crew Commander stationed at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Base in Thailand. The bulk of the collection consists of twenty (20) slides taken by Platt. The slides do not have identifying information but generally depict military aircraft and surrounding locations. Some images depict military aircraft such as Sikorsky (S-61R) HH-3E Jolly Green Giants, and three images feature a Lockheed C-130A Hercules accident at an airfield. Other subjects featured in the slides include soldiers, aerial views of landscapes, and street scenes in Thailand and Laos.
The Robert Withrow Vietnam War Collection is related to the 1965-1967 military service of Robert Withrow, a Fireman (E-3) aboard the USS Kitty Hawk during the Vietnam War. The collection consists of ten (10) photographs, two (2) yearbooks, and four (4) military patches related to his service. The color photographs, which do not have any identifying captions, primarily feature aircraft aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, including the Grumman A-6F Intruder, North American A-5 Vigilante, and McDonnell F-4D Phantom II.
The military patches and yearbooks relate to the WestPac (Western Pacific) tours of the USS Kitty Hawk, circa 1965-1967.
The Roy T. Church Vietnam War Photograph Collection is primarily comprised of slides and photographs related to the 1965-1969 military service of Roy T. Church, a bombardier and navigator for the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. The sixty-three (63) color slides and fourteen (14) photographs depict military life in Southeast Asia during the war. The images feature military personnel, military aircraft, aerial views of Vietnam and Laos, and shots of Vietnamese rural life.
Also included are a few images of the North Cascade Mountains in Washington State, circa 1967, as well as a partial map of Vietnam.
