The vertical poles mounted to the aircraft are part of the trapeze mechanism allowing the plane to dock with airships in flight.

Inscription by Bowers on verso: "See side view photo in book, photo F9C-2 No. 7. Note two different applications of black to tail and rear fuselage. Solid-color tail does not look black as used on Macon. Old rudder stripes show through on 9056. Miller in 9058 had blue stripe and flew 9056 and what color? - Red. You have a side view of this. This view and side view F9C-2 neg has 1/4'' black border for red fuselage band."
