HH-52A Helicopter. Basket hoist rescue drill. A basket hoist rescue is demonstrated here be a gas turbine powered HH-52A 'flying boat' helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station, Brooklyn N.Y. Built by the Sikorsky Aircraft Co., this new model of a helicopter, known also as the S-62, was acquired by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1963 for search and rescue work. The single turbine, single rotor HH-52A is the world’s first helicopter built with a flying boat hull. It can operate from land, water, ice, snow, swamp, mud, or practically any other surface. It has a cruising speed of 98 miles per hour, a maximum speed of 110 miles per hour, and a carrying capacity of more than 3,000 pounds. This helicopter can fly approximately 190 miles, pick up an injured person with a rescue hoist or by landing on water, and return to home base with a ten-percent margin of fuel remaining.
