Armstrong descended the Lunar Module landing gear ladder to take man's first steps on the lunar surface. In this picture his left foot drops below the last rung of the ladder as he begins the 3-foot drop to the footpad. (The black bar running through the center of the picture is an anomaly in the TV ground data system at Goldstone Tracking Station.)"
