Typed on verso of duplicate image: "Headquarters Army Air Forces, Shanghai: 'Thunderbolts' (P-47's) of the U. S. Army Air Forces have come to rest at Kiangwan Airdrome. During the war the rugged single seater fighters, powered by a 2000 horsepower Pratt and Whitney radial type engine, made many a raid on Japanese communication lines in the Yellow River area from their base in Sian in Shensi province. One of the heaviest (13,500 pounds) of single engine fighter planes which the AAF used during the war, the 'Thunderbolt' is armed with eight fifty calibre [caliber] guns; carry a thousand pounds of bombs under its stubby wings. As fast as the 'Mustangs' (P-51's) with which they often flew missions in China, 'Thunderbolts' can develop a speed of more than 425 miles per hour. (Official USAAF Photo)."
