'Clover Leaf' Speed Breaks: A radically different innovation on Republic Aviation Corporation's F-105 Thunderchief fighter-bomber is speed brakes that actually form the last 36 inches of the fuselage when closed in flight. During braking these surfaces unfold like the blossoming petals of a flower and serve as a 360-degree wind brake. Capping the windstream in perfect flight balance it slows the twice-the-speed-of-sound plane with greater efficiency and stability. In setting a new world's record for the 100 kilometer circular course in the Farmingdale, L.I. manufactured plane, speed brakes were employed extensively to adjust the speed to the numerous demands of the course."
