Originally established in 1934 as Líneas Aéreas Mineras, S.A., it obtained a loan from United Air Lines in 1942 to help purchase newer aircraft. United purchased controlling interest by acquiring 75% of the airline's stock. While keeping the LAMSA acronym, the name was changed to Lineas Aereas Mexicanas SA. In 1944, LAMSA added international service to North America. In 1952, United sold the airline to the Mexican government and it effectively ceased operations as it was then merged into Aeronaves de México, which rebranded in 1972 as Aeroméxico.
