Established in 1968 as Gateway Aviation with headquarters in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the airline changed its name in 1969. At that time, the airline also relocated its headquarters to Quad City Airport in Moline, Illinois. MVA ceased operations in 1985 when it merged into Air Wisconsin.
