Inscription on verso: "2nd Lieut. Harley C. Hyde - U.S.A. Reserve Military Aviator - Air Service. Enlisted in Air Service Reserve, Nov. 1917. Called to active duty May 11, 918, as Flying Cadet at School of Military Aeronautics University of California, at Berkeley. Graduated from S.M.A. after twelve week and was sent to the Aviation Concentration Camp at Camp Dick, Dallas, Texas. Was later sent to Flying School at Souther Field, Americus, Georgia. Completed primary training there and was commissioned Second Lieutenant, Air Service, with rating of Reserve Military Aviator, Nov. 2, 1918. Transferred to Instructors' School, Brooks Field, San Antonio, Texas, Nov. 16, 1918. Graduated Dec. 31, 1918. Transferred to Barron Field, Fort Worth, Texas, as instructor, Jan. 13, 1919. Transfered to Post Field, Fort Sill, Okla., as instructor, Mar. 17, 1919. With Cadet Wm. Crabtree met death in an airplane accident at Post Field, March 25, 1919.
