He also touches briefly on his postwar military career. Special focus on a photo reconnaissance mission over Shikoku, Japan on March 19, 1945 in which Crosby witnessed the bombing of the USS Franklin.Biographical NoteJohn T. Crosby was born on July 30, 1920 in Eureka, California. He joined the United States Navy in 1942 and was commissioned the following year. He served two tours of duty in the Pacific Theater, one with Fighting Squadron 18 (VF-18) on the USS Bunker Hill and one with Fighting Squadron 17 (VF-17) stationed aboard the USS Hornet. Crosby remained in the Navy Reserves after World War II and retired as a commander in 1969.
