Photograph of a U.S. Army Air Corps Boeing B-17E Flying Fortress aircraft (tail number 41-2408) at Hickam Field, Hawaii, December 7, 1941. Photo was taken during the Pearl Harbor attack. Smoke from the damaged USS Arizona is visible in the background.
Caption from print of negative: "Hickam Field, Hawaii. December 7, 1941. B-17E in foreground and B-17D right background, after arrival from Hamilton Field, California. Smoke billowing in right background is from the Battleship Arizona, after being hit by attacking Japanese aircraft. This photograph appeared on the front page (not cover) of the December 27, 1941 issue of Life Magazine. It also appeared in the 50th anniversary book published by Life Magazine. Photo by S/Sgt. Lee R. Embree, 38th Reconnaissance Squadron, USAAC. Aircraft serial #41-2408. Crew on this B-17E as follows: 1st Lt. Karl T. Barthelmess, Pilot. 2nd Lt. Larry J. Sheehan, Copilot. 2nd Lt. Charles E.
