[Herman J. Sommerhauser photograph album, circa 1914-1919]
Title
Description
Photograph album containing 72 photographs from the World War I service of Herman J. Sommerhauser, circa 1918-1919. The album was at some point unbound and is now in loose-leaf form, with 70 photographs on six black scrapbook pages and two additional loose photos. Photos are primarily snapshots, with a few studio portraits, most with handwritten captions.
Images feature servicemen (and a few women) in uniform, posed and in the field, seated in or standing in front of aircraft, working with aircraft parts, and at leisure in French cities; numerous aircraft on the ground, Jeeps and automobiles; barracks buildings, the interior of the Orly Field Y.M.C.A. building; Paris wartime scenes including views of the Seine River, antiaircraft guns and tanks in city squares; a few snapshots from a ship journey on the U.S.S. Caserta (possibly the return home post-war), with views of Gibraltar and Long Island, New York. The majority of the photos are captioned as being taken at Orly Field, with several groups of men identified as the 650th Aero Squadron.
Aircraft pictured include De Havilland (Airco) D.H.4, Salmson 2 A2, Morane-Saulnier Type AI family, Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5, Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2b, LePère 11 (C-11, C II), SPAD XII (S.12), SPAD XIII (S.13), Hannover CL III.a, Sopwith Camel, and Breguet Bre.14 A2.
