Title

[Serviceman working on captured Hannover CL.IIIa aircraft]

Description

Photograph of a serviceman working on a captured Hannover CL.IIIa aircraft, France, circa 1918-1919. This captured German aircraft was shot down by Eddie Rickenbacker and Reed Chambers on October 2, 1918 and was repainted to commemorate its status as a trophy plane. Text painted on the fuselage reads: "Trophy of 1st Pursuit Group. Shot down by Capt. E. V. Rickenbacker & Lt. Reed Chambers, 94th Aero Squadron, Oct. 2nd, 1918." Note that the inscription misidentifies the aircraft as a German Rumpler.

Inscription: "German Rumpler. France, 1918-19."

Part of the Irwin Bryan Meyers Photograph Album, an album containing 129 photographs related to Meyers's service as an airplane mechanic in France during and after World War I, circa 1918-1919.
