[Album Three from Nancy Harkness Collection of World War I Photograph Albums]

Description

Album Three from the Nancy Harkness Collection of World War I Photograph Albums, circa 1914-1919. The album contains 324 black-and-white photographs with handwritten captions of various scenes during World War I. This album is predominantly souvenir copy photographs, with numerous views of German and Italian soldiers and prisoners, the British marching into Cologne, the Italian retreat and equipment left behind, often graphic battlefield scenes, enemy aircraft, and significant people such as the Kaiser, Crown Prince Wilhelm, German aces Manfred von Richthofen and Max Immelman ("trophy" photos of the latter's downed aircraft and death), the grave and downed plane of Quentin Roosevelt, and American aces Eddie Rickenbacker, Gervais Raoul Lufbery, and others from the 94th Squadron.

Numerous aircraft are pictured such as Caproni, Sopwith Camel, Halberstadt, SPAD, Breguet, Albatros, Bristol, Hannover, Handley Page, Farman, and Salmson, with views of markings and squadron insignia including those of the 12th, 91st, and 94th Aero Squadrons. Of particular note is one shot of a 1st Aero Squadron plane with a large reconnaissance camera attached.

Additional images include war scenes such as village ruins, aerial views of battlefields, crashed aircraft, dead soldiers and horses; views of various warcraft including observation balloons, camouflaged heavy artillery guns, armor cars, tanks, anti-aircraft guns, transport ships; group and individual shots of aviators, men of the IV Corps, women YMCA staff, French villagers.

Locations include Sinzig, Trier, Koblenz, Cologne (Germany); Metz, Nice, Reims, Mercy-le-Haut, Châtillon-sur-Seine, Paris, Argonne, Étain, Bapaume, Albert, Hussigny (France); Flanders, Brussels (Belgium); Monte Carlo (Monaco).

Several captions of the post-war occupation of the palace in Sinzig suggest that the albums' creator was part of the Air Service IV Corps stationed there.
