Title
[Servicemen using dump truck to spread sand over road at Kiangwan Airfield]
Description
Photograph of U.S. Army Air Forces servicemen using a dump truck to spread sand over a road at Kiangwan Airfield, China, circa 1940s.
Typed on verso: "U. S. Army Air Force Engineers start rebuilding roads at Kiangwan Airfield after heavy rain. Jap-built dirt roads became churned into quagmires and filled with deep ruts under the impact of heavy weather. All weather surfacing is being put in on many of the main roads now being used by the U. S. Army Air Forces at Shanghai airfield. A base of rock is surfaced by heavy gravel and sand which permits water to drain off leaving the road surface dry and solid. Finally the road is surfaced with waste oil drained from crank cases and aircraft engines and is rolled smooth. (Official USAAF photo)."
