Abstract
This audio recording contains remarks by William P. Lear about his 1956 flight to the Soviet Union, recorded shortly after his return to Switzerland, circa 1956. Lear recounts the story behind the flight, beginning with his initial flight to Berlin accompanied by his wife Moya, their interactions with the Russian embassy in East Berlin, and their flight to Moscow via Vilnius, Lithuania. He then discusses his experiences in the Soviet Union, such as showcasing his Cessna 310 to Russian officials and touring a Tupolev aircraft. He also defends himself against accusations that he divulged confidential information. Other topics discussed include Soviet aeronautic and radar technology, his thoughts on American-Soviet relations, and his business ventures in Europe.
Note that this is an edited version of another recording. This version removes much of Moya O. Lear’s commentary. The original recording is also present in the collection.
