[Hans Eibl photograph album]
Title
Description
Photograph album documenting the military service of Hans Eibl with the German Army during World War I, circa 1914-1918. The album contains approximately 120 black-and-white photographs. The photos are mostly uncaptioned, with a few featuring printed captions or occasionally marked with handwritten names and/or X marks, presumably noting fellow soldiers who died.
Images feature numerous views of German soldiers, posed and candid, with individual portraits and group shots. Scenes include soldiers at leisure in the barracks or outdoors, playing cards or chess, having meals, listening to music, even at a puppet show. Other images show soldiers in the field with rifles and artillery, building fortifications, barracks, and digging trenches. Portraits of Eibl are scattered throughout the album. Two photos show men with aircraft. One photo of a distant group of soldiers and dignitaries is captioned as a visit from Prince Leopold of Bavaria.
Additional images feature views of villages and the countryside, including churches, graveyards, farms, and lakes.
