Description

Photograph of Sergeant John H. Roeder of the 24th Statistical Control Unit, U.S. Army Air Forces, using a machine to sort personnel cards, China, circa 1940s.

Typed caption on verso: "Headquarters Army Air Forces, Shanghai: -- Sgt. John H. Roeder, St. Louis, Missouri, completes the last card sort to be done by machine process in the China Theater of Operations. From 2200 officers personnel cards, the cards of all regular army officers in China, are being extracted to be tabulated and compiled into a report for the War Department. The machine records section, 24th Statistical Control Unit of Lt. General George E. Stratemeyer's Headquarters Army Air Forces, China Theater, closed late in January. Reduction in the number of U.S. Army personnel in China makes continued machine handling of records impractical. (Official USAAF Photo)."
