Description

Film footage of the Lafayette Escadrille in France and shots of various biplanes, produced circa 1930s-1950s. The first segment, possibly produced by G. B. Jarrett, is comprised of short clips of Escadrille members and aircraft at Luxeuil Aerodrome and other areas of France, intercut with still-shots of photographs and documents related to the squadron. Scenes include service members posing with aircraft, aircraft on the flight line, aircraft in flight, aerial views of the airfield and other locations, and aircraft performing rolls and other maneuvers. A few segments focus on specific aviators: Kiffin Rockwell, who was killed in 1916; fighter ace Raoul Lufbery, who was killed in 1918; and Edwin C. "Ted" Parsons.

The second segment, which begins at 00:14:24, was filmed on the set of an aviation-themed movie, likely the 1938 film "Men with Wings." The scenes depict various aircraft, mostly vintage biplanes, on the ground, taxiing, and taking off. Specific aircraft featured in this segment are a Pfalz D.XII (00:14:23), a Lockheed Model 8 Sirius with camera mount (00:16:21), a lineup of three Lincoln LF-1s (00:18:03), and a Stearman aircraft with camera mount (00:18:26).

The footage is in black-and-white and is silent.

Several title cards appear throughout the footage:
00:00:10 - "Escadrille Americaine Luxeuil"
00:01:39 - "Luxeuil Aerodrome"
00:03:42 - "Kiffin Rockwell at Luxeuil"
00:05:22 - "His last flight"
00:07:20 - "Lufbery at Verdun"
00:09:34 - "Ted Parsons"
00:10:48 - "The La Fayette at Ham"
00:12:05 - "Death of Lufbery"

Label on film container: "Lafayette (Jarrett)/Kinnel Pfalz - 'Men with Wings.'"
