Title

Allied hospital ship bombed by Germans [HMHS Newfoundland]

Description

Photograph of the damaged HMHS Newfoundland, an Allied hospital ship, after being bombed by German forces, Salerno, Italy, circa September 1943.

Typed caption glued to verso: "Allied hospital ship bombed by Germans. This Allied hospital ship, the Newfoundland, was bombed by German dive bombers off Salerno, Italy, on Sept. 13, 1943. No patients were aboard the vessel when it was attacked. A total of 103 Army nurses aboard were saved but several doctors and nurses were killed. This picture shows the identification of the Newfoundland as a hospital ship (note crosses on the side of the vessel). However, the Germans attacked despite this identification and despite the bright lights showing at the time. The Newfoundland was damaged beyond salvage and had to be sunk by an Allied warship after all personnel had been removed. Serviced by New York to List A. 16599-PHE. Not for use in British Isles or Western Hemisphere. Approved by appropriate U.S. authority."

Stamped on verso: "Important. Not for use in Western Hemisphere or British Isles."
