The James George Burton Photograph Collection is comprised of two (2) panoramic photographs relating to the Army Balloon School at Ross Field, Arcadia, California. The photographs show students of the school posed with balloons, jeeps, and motorcycles. Both photographs are credited to the Huddleston Photo Company of Los Angeles, California.
The John Hess Shuman Collection is primarily comprised of a World War I diary written by Shuman, who served as a member of the ground crew for the U.S. Army Air Service. The diary covers August 30 through December 28, 1918, describing Shuman's experience traveling to and in France, his duties as a groundsman, and post-war homesickness.
The John Sylvester Wheelwright Collection is comprised of visual materials related to Wheelright's World War I career. Four watercolor paintings depict airships and officers. The large scrapbook album contains black and white photographs of numerous models of airships and their various components, officers and crews, naval ships and a few airplanes, and aerial views of British coastline and towns. The collection also includes one photographic portrait of a British officer.
The Joseph A. Bossi Collection contains two (2) items relating to Bossi's service in Europe during World War I. The program is for a reception for squadron members in Dover, England. The postcard features an image of armistice celebrations in Paris, France.
The Joseph F. Wehner Collection is primarily comprised of photographs and documents related to the life and World War I service of Joseph Wehner, a fighter ace who served with the 27th Aero Squadron and who was killed in action. The collection includes correspondence to his sister Hazel, as well as correspondence about Wehner's death written to various members of his family. The photographs in the collection depict Wehner during his aviation training and during his time on the front in France. In addition to these personal manuscript and photograph items, this collection also contains ephemera concerning Joseph Wehner and his friend and wingman Frank Luke.
The Julius Christian Harland Knauss Collection is comprised of a materials related to the Naval Training Camp situated on the University of Washington campus during World War I. The materials consist of a panoramic photograph, a souvenir album (circa 1918-1919), and a magazine clipping (circa 1959,). The panorama, broken in two parts, shows the camp along the waterfront of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. The clipping includes a later image of the canal in 1959 and a map of the city of Seattle. The album contains photographs of individuals, officers, staff groups, and companies, as well as facilities and activities.
The Lionel Cherry Gilmour World War I Collection is comprised of a small photograph album, loose photographs, a prisoner-of-war diary, and assorted research documents pertaining to the World War I service and prisoner-of-war (POW) experience of Lieutenant Lionel Cherry Gilmour (1891-1973) of the Royal Air Force (RAF) and its predecessor, the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). The collection has been arranged into two series: personal materials of Lionel Cherry Gilmour and research materials.
The Marc Lagen Collection contains military documents, photographs, correspondence, and ephemera relating to the World War I career of Captain Marc Aloysius Lagen, who served in the Balloon Section of the U.S. Air Service. A substantial number of military orders, memos, and other communications trace Lagen's travels and transitions from the National Guard and a brief stint on the Mexican border to his commission with the Signal Corps and assignment to the front in France. The papers reflect Lagen's simultaneous work with the French and American militaries.

The Mark Winters Stereograph Collection contains forty-eight (48) stereograph images of European World War I scenes. The stereographs are a 48-image set published by the Keystone View Company in 1921, although the photos were taken from approximately 1914-1919.

The Nancy Harkness Collection is comprised of three albums of World War I photographs, circa 1914-1919. Together the albums contain five hundred sixty (560) black-and-white photographs and one (1) piece of paper ephemera with handwritten captions. The photos center primarily around American air squadrons stationed along the French-German border, while also including a number of images of enemy aircraft, war scenes, and views of European cities. Photos include American servicemen and some women staff; aviators with their aircraft, numerous crashes, aerial reconnaissance photos, and views of airdromes; events such as a decoration ceremony, a visit by the Prince of Wales to troops, and the arrival of various occupation forces in post-war Germany.
Please note that some of the albums in this collection contain graphic images of wartime casualties. The captions also make use of derogatory terms for German and French people.
The Norman E. Horn Collection is comprised of five (5) photographs of aircraft, military aviation students, and civilians at Love Field, Dallas, Texas. The images show Horn and fellow servicemen with the Curtiss JN-4 Jenny aircraft with which they were trained.
The Norman "Jim" S. Archibald Collection relates to the life and military service of Archibald during World War I and II. The collection contains extensive correspondence, military documents from both world wars, photographs, and materials related to Archibald's book, Heaven High, Hell Deep. The correspondence is primarily with Archibald's sister Hazel and with close friend Katharine Lane Weems, covering the periods of Archibald's military service and personal success as an author. Archibald's book, published in 1935, details his World War I experiences and the associated materials include correspondence regarding its publication, promotion, and success, as well as manuscript drafts, reviews, and other items. A few pieces of personal ephemera relate to Archibald's world travels in the 1930s.
The Peter A. Klover World War I Collection is a small collection consisting of documents and photographs from approximately 1917-1935 related to Klover's service in World War I as an aviation mechanic in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.
The Ray M. and Leonard H. Grimshaw World War I Collection relates primarily to the military service of Ray M. Grimshaw during World War I. The collection contains correspondence, military documents, photographs, postcards, diary, booklets, and ephemera related to Ray's time with the 95th Aero Squadron, where he served as a mechanic. There is also a small amount of correspondence from his older brother, Leonard H. Grimshaw, who also served in World War I.
The Robert Richmond Aero Squadron Photographs are comprised of two photographs relating to the 371st Aero Squadron. Both images are group portraits of squadron members, one with a hangar of biplanes visible in the background. Robert Richmond appears to have served during World War I with the 371st Aero Squadron, though it is unclear if he remained with the squadron for his entire service.
The S. E. Hutton Collection of Caproni Materials contains items related to the United States Army Air Service program to construct Caproni Ca.44 (Military Ca.5, Ca.600) aircraft in Italy at the end of World War I. The collection is comprised primarily of two (2) reports written by S. E. Hutton detailing the project, including the instruction given to U.S. servicemen at the Caproni, Fiat, and Isotta-Fraschini plants, and detailed specifications and procedures relating to the construction, assembly, and operation of the aircraft. The reports include numerous blueprints and original photographs detailing the work and components, as well as several group photographs of the servicemen and officers involved in the project.
The Samuel E. White Collection contains materials from the World War I career of Samuel E. White, who served with the balloon companies of the American Expeditionary Force. The diary documents White's training in the United States and service in France as a balloon observer, with details on fellow servicemen, daily movements and activities. Additional materials include various military documents relating to his service, as well as a few photographs of balloons and other scenes.
The Sidney Van Wyck Peters Scrapbook contains photographs, military orders and memos, maps, clippings, and ephemera relating to Peters' service with the 24th Aero Squadron in World War I. The scrapbook contains three hundred eighty-four (384) photographs, which comprise the bulk of the album, with some family snapshots mixed in with a majority of wartime images. A significant number of the wartime photos feature portraits and group shots, including officers, squadron groups and aircraft in formation, snapshots of cadets, trainees and servicemen, Red Cross women, and men in military and pilots' uniforms, often posed in front of aircraft. Other images include aerial photos; street scenes and post-bombing ruins in French cities and towns; a number of souvenir copy photographs of war scenes; warcraft, aircraft including balloons, Curtiss, Salmson, and captured German planes. In addition to the photographs, the scrapbook includes ephemera from Peters' travels in France and his military service.
The Ted Ingersoll Sr. Collection primarily relates to a 1918 exhibit of Lieutenant Henry (sometimes Henri) Farré's paintings of World War I aerial warfare. The collection contains an exhibition catalog and lithographs of Farré's paintings. Also included is a scrapbook of articles, drawings, lecture outlines, and specifications of World War I aircraft.
The Walter and Flossie Smith Collection consists of one box and one oversized folder of materials. Most of the materials relate to Walter's long career in the Air Force (1942-1973) and his active participation in the P-47 Pilots Association. There are also several pieces of World War I-era sheet music which belonged to Flossie. Only the sheet music has been digitized for this collection.
The Walter Herlofson World War I Navy Collection contains photographs and postcards, seaplane blueprints, and religious books belonging to Herlofson, who served in the U.S. Navy during the war. This small collection of personal items was enclosed in a wooden ditty box upon donation. Photographs are primarily commercial shots of Navy sailors and wartime France.
The Wilbur D. Kennedy World War I Collection contains materials related to the World War I career of Kennedy, a reconnaissance pilot for the 12th Aero Squadron (American Expeditionary Force). The collection includes a diary; extensive personal correspondence, primarily letters to Carmelite Kennedy; identification cards; military service papers, orders and memos; financial materials; assorted ephemera, postcards and clippings; Veteran's Administration papers; sixty-seven (67) photographs including aerial views, people and scenes in Germany; and oversized materials including a certificate and photograph album. The large photograph album traces his time from training in Minnesota and Ohio to service abroad along the French-German border, with significant views of aircraft, artillery, and wartime scenes.

The William James World War I Photograph Collection consists of five photographic prints of World War I fighter pilots and aircraft. The pilots pictured are Billy Bishop, Frank Luke, Raoul Lufbery and Eddie Rickenbacker. The aircraft pictured is a Fokker Dr.I Triplane (F.I).
The William Monks Photograph Albums are comprised of two albums containing two hundred four (204) black and white photographs of the Monks family and William Monks' World War I service in the U.S. Navy. The first album primarily contains images from Monks' training in the Navy, with numerous views of aircraft including biplanes, float planes, and dirigibles, in flight, on the ground, and many wrecked. Other images include Navy ships such as the New Mexico, barracks and camp construction, and group shots of Navy men. A few captions make mention of the sinking of the Titanic, which may imply that some of the photos were taken prior to the war. The second album contains mostly family shots and scenic views. Although uncaptioned, most of these images appear to have been taken in the Pacific Northwest and were likely post-war.
The World War I Era Sheet Music Collection is comprised of eighteen (18) pieces of sheet music for popular songs written before and during World War I. The collection includes several patriotic pre-war songs focusing on joining the army and doing one's duty for the war effort, with this subject continuing into the early war. The songs of later years shift into subjects of missing loved ones "over there" and hoping for peace and their safe return. The music was written primarily by American and British songwriters and composers. The music covers feature colorful illustrations and occasionally photo portraits of the composers and/or singers who popularized the song.
The World War I Photographs are comprised of sixteen (16) photographs of soldiers circa 1914-1918. The collection is a mix of photo postcards and photographic prints, studio portraits and candid shots, all depicting soldiers from different countries and sides of the war. Some of the postcards include handwritten notes by the soldier pictured. Nationalities include American, British, French, German, and possibly Russian.
The World War I Stereographs contain seven (7) stereographs depicting World War I scenes. Six (6) of the cards were produced by the Keystone View Company and one (1) by Underwood & Underwood. The images feature trench scenes, war ruins, soldiers, and steamships. The reverse of each stereograph includes a note on the historical context of the image, placing it within the narrative of the war.
